{"id":636,"date":"2026-05-25T18:42:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T18:42:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/transfrontaliera.upt.ro\/evenimente\/monitoring-campaign-carried-out-in-the-vicinity-of-former-mining-operations-brochure-no-4\/"},"modified":"2026-06-15T20:29:01","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T20:29:01","slug":"monitoring-campaign-carried-out-in-the-vicinity-of-former-mining-operations-brochure-no-4","status":"publish","type":"evenimente","link":"https:\/\/transfrontaliera.upt.ro\/en\/events\/monitoring-campaign-carried-out-in-the-vicinity-of-former-mining-operations-brochure-no-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Monitoring campaign carried out in the vicinity of former mining operations &#8211; brochure no. 4"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the framework of the ERA-MIN project \u2013 Environmental risk assessment from mining activities as a result of tailings disposal in the Romania\u2013Serbia cross-border area (RORS00063), it was published <strong>Brochure No. IV has been published <\/strong>, dedicated to investigating microbiological contamination and the phenomenon of antimicrobial resistance in water resources in the Moldova Nou\u0103 area.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The publication presents the results of a complex monitoring campaign carried out in the vicinity of former mining operations and tailings dumps, with the objective of assessing the impact of historical mining activities on aquatic ecosystems and identifying potential risks to public health.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study included the analysis of surface waters, groundwater and sectors of the Danube in the vicinity of the tailings dumps. Checkpoints located in areas unaffected by mining activity, local watercourses, sectors with an industrial footprint, and water sources used by local communities were investigated. The research aimed to identify the microorganisms present in these environments and evaluate their sensitivity to antibiotics.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the surface waters of the control areas, microorganisms characteristic of natural ecosystems, with favorable sensitivity profiles, predominated. In contrast, in areas under the influence of mining activities, species such as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus cereus, Pectobacterium carotovorum and Escherichia coli have been identified, adapted to the chemical stress conditions generated by the presence of metals and mineral compounds. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Analysis of samples collected from the Danube sectors revealed a high microbiological diversity, with the presence of species such as Rheinheimera soli, Aeromonas spp., Pseudomonas anguilliseptica and Acidovorax temperans, microorganisms specific to stable aquatic ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of particular interest are the results obtained for groundwater, where resilient species such as Ralstonia pickettii were identified, capable of surviving in conditions of reduced nutrient availability and associated in the literature with opportunistic infections. Also, the presence of microorganisms such as Streptococcus lutetiensis, Corynebacterium variabile and Staphylococcus warneri indicates the vulnerability of certain water sources to anthropogenic influences and the need for their continuous monitoring. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brochure highlights the link between environmental chemical factors and the structure of microbial communities. The high conductivity values \u200b\u200band increased sulfate concentrations observed at certain sampling points create selective habitats that favor the development of microorganisms capable of tolerating chemical stress and developing complex adaptive mechanisms. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An important aspect of the study is the analysis of the co-selection phenomenon between metals present in the environment and antibiotic resistance. The results suggest that the adaptation of bacteria to conditions of enhanced mineralization can simultaneously favor tolerance to certain classes of antimicrobials, a phenomenon with direct implications for public health and water resource management. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study&#8217;s conclusions emphasize the need to integrate microbiological indicators into environmental monitoring programs and highlight the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to assessing the impact of mining activities on ecosystems and local communities.
